Black community leaders—educators, intellectuals, activists, and artists—were drawn to Harlem to work together, support each other, and use their talent, culture, and African heritage to help bring about change for Black people. Their work encouraged Black people to look to their culture and African heritage for self-esteem and identity during a time when Black culture and African heritage were portrayed negatively.
